Cemetery is closed for storm cleanup

Lakewood Memorial Park is closed for at least the next two weeks because of the extensive damage a severe tornado caused in the cemetery on Friday, April 15, 2011. Manager Bobby Harrell said, “More than 200 of our live oak trees are gone. Luckily no one was hurt.” About one third of the 450-acre park sustained storm damage.
“All of our graves and mausoleums are still intact,” Bobby said. “While some markers and monuments will need repairs, all loved ones’ remains are safe.”
The storm damage includes uprooted and fallen trees, inaccessible roads and an extensive amount of storm debris scattered throughout the park. “Safety is our top priority right now, which is why we cannot let anyone into the cemetery,” Bobby said. “We apologize for this inconvenience, and will do our best to clean up the park so families can return as soon as possible.”
Bobby said once the roads are cleared and the debris removed, he and his crew will be able to better assess the damage. Lakewood Memorial Park will contact families to let them know if their loved ones’ marker has been damaged and needs repair.
Anyone who wants to check on their loved ones’ burial site can contact Lakewood Memorial Park at lakewoodfuneralhomes@stei.com or call
